The World Championships could not have started better for Telenet-Fidea and Ridley Bikes. Thijs Aerts claimed the junior title on his Ridley X-Night!

There was a big crash at the start of the race that caused chaos in the opening sectors. Most Belgians avoided the crash, and they immediately came to the fore. Nieuwenhuis (Netherlands) was able to follow, and he set a furious pace on the first lap. The Belgians worked together as a team, and Nieuwenhuis had to counter several accelerations. In the final lap, Thijs Aerts placed the winning attack. Nieuwenhuis was completely worn down by all the counters, and also had to let Peeters go. The sprint for the third place was won by Schuermans, Nieuwenhuis finished on place 4.

It is the first time in history the Belgian close out the podium in the junior category. Belgium's last junior world title was in 2007 with Joeri Adams.

Aerts:“It’s my first ever world championships race and I just wanted to get a good result. This win comes as quite a surprise. It’s great of course! There was one place on the track where I could make the difference, I rode where everybody had to run."
