Lotto-Belisol youngster Tim Wellens took second place in the Belgian timetrial championship. After his strong performance in the Ardennes classics where he showed his good climbing legs, he also proves that he can do well in a timetrial. We hope he can continue this great form in the Giro, his first Grand Tour with the elites.

At the Belgian Championship time trial in Hooglede-Gits, the pros had to cover three laps of 14.8 kilometers, for a total distance of 44.4 kilometers. Tim set a time of 56'58" on his Ridley Dean Fast. Only Kristof Vandewalle managed to ride faster. He won his third successive TT title. Pieter Serry went home with bronze, Phillipe Gilbert finished 4th.

Tim Wellens: "I didn't expect this result. I came to Hooglede wanting to finish in the top five. The course was pretty technical, with some sharp turns. There was also a lot of wind. Bart Leysen, my sports director, advised me very well and told me on which parts I definitely shouldn't let my tempo drop. I had the fourth intermediate time for a while, so I was on schedule. With a very fast last lap, I was able to finish 2nd. My form after the classics is very good, now I'm focusing on the Giro."
