The springtime classics of Lotto-Belisol

Jelle Vanendert was the leader of team Lotto-Belisol in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He finished on place 18. “The others were better than me”, he honestly concluded.

Last year he notched up some nice results in the Ardennes classics, but this time it didn’t go as planned. Vanendert had to leave the rave in the second stage of Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco due to illness. It seems like he never really got back to his best form (39th in la Flèche Wallonne and 13th in Amstel Gold Race).

The third place of Jürgen Roelandts probably was the highlight for Lotto-Belisol. Bad luck and injuries got in the way of better results in the other cobblestone classics. Maybe a sign that the team lacks depth?

“We obviously hoped to do better”, says team director Marc Sergeant. “We can’t be happy with the results in the last months. In our classics team, it all comes down to one person: Roelandts or Vanendert. When something happens to them like in Sanremo, Roubaix or the Flèche Wallonne, we are done for the day”.

We hope that these results will encourage the riders to do better in the Grand Tours. A good WorldTour ranking is vital for the years to come!
