When the Youth takes over
What a weekend we had! Lotte Kopecky (21) became World Champion Madison together with Jolien D’Hoore. They rode the perfect race. Countered countless number of attacks and sprints. Won with precision the decisive sprints. And showed the world an unseen level of women’s team commitment.
On Saturday, we had a second opportunity to celebrate. Bjorg Lambrecht (20) won Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 in a millimeter sprint against Knox. Lambrecht saw an opportunity to attack on the Roche aux Faucons. Only Knox, Hamilton and Barta were able to follow. When they arrived on the velodrome of Ans, their lead was sufficient enough to do a well-timed sprint. Lambrecht showed his BeTOUGH side and won that exhausting sprint.
On Sunday the Elites of Lotto Soudal and WM3 Pro Cycling were ready to show their strength. Team Leaders of the day: Tiesj Benoot (23), Tim Wellens (25) and Kasia Niewiadoma (22). They didn’t disappoint. Benoot attacked and formed the ‘tête de la course’. Unfortunately, a chain drop prevented him to compete with the best.
Tim Wellens tried to close the gap, but going full gas and then climbing the Keutenberg were too heavy to close the gap to the front group. Wellens worked well with Van Avermaet and Valverde, but the front group was going to battle for victory.
Kasia was once again super close to the victory, but perfect team play of Boels - Dolmans Cycling Team and a really strong Anna van der Breggen decided differently. Going for the win on Huy!
