First cobblestone race of the year
Belgium is awake! Cyclists are conquering cobblestones again. Wheels hopping from stone to stone, the chain dancing with the chainstay in between. Riders swarming of the cobble sections like a bunch of sparrows in the sky. It was a lovely sight.
Ridley had several teams competing today. The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Women had a lot some really strong riders who made it our WM3 Pro Cycling and Lotto Soudal Ladies super hard. The OHNWomen was an attractive race, which opened up quite early. Lotte Kopecky (LSL) followed the leaders quite well but in the end she didn’t had the force to stay up front. No-one to blame and a superb ride of the Lotto youngster (only 21 years old). What a future she will be having!
WM3 didn’t have that much luck. A big crash held up Kasia Niewiadoma. She lost a lot of time, made up a lot of places and ended up in the third group sprinting for place 7.
The Men Elite had a lot of Ridley riders. Justin Jules (Veranclassic) and Leigh Howard (Aqua Blue) went up front with the breakaway while Lotto Soudal mended the peloton together with the other big teams.
A big crash on the Donderij meant a huge deck shuffle. On the Taaienberg Van Avermaet, Sagan, Vanmarcke and others pulled away from the peloton. Jürgen Roelandts knocked himself back into the second group, but the strongest riders of today sat in the front group. Van Avermaet sprinted to a second victory in two years Omloop. Big congratulation to Greg!
