De Gendt wins another stage on Catalan soil with his Helium SLX

He repeats his 2013 and 2016 wins in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
Thomas De Gendt has successfully completed another attack by winning the thirth stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on his Helium SLX. The Belgian went in the breakaway with 4 fellow riders, but he was the only one able to stay ahead of the peloton. On top of the win he takes the lead in the GC and mountain classification as well.

A day before the start of the race the organization shortened the mountain stage. As a result attackers saw an extra opportunity to win in Catalonia. Such opportunities are Thomas De Gendt’s favorite, so he went in the attack with 4 other riders. They didn’t get much advantage, due to Movistar controlling the pace in the peloton. Was it because of De Gendt’s reputation?

It was also the headwind that was pacing the breakaway, so the attackers saved some energy for last. On the first climb of the day two riders couldn’t keep up De Gendt’s pace and were dropped. The second climb was the graveyard for the other two. The dropped attackers were caught by the peloton, but the Lotto Soudal rider managed to stay ahead.

De Gendt had 20 seconds bonus on the main group which offered him the time to celebrate explicitly with a setting sun behind him. An epic shot. One of the most beautiful victories of his career, dixit De Gendt. And yet his thirth stage win in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, after winning in 2013 and 2016.

Thanks to his lead and bonifications De Gendt took over the leaders jersey from Alejandro Valverde with a 23 second bonus.
