Marianne Vos takes European title in Herning

The Dutch lady is the strongest of a six-headed group
Marianne Vos has won the European title in road cycling in Denmark last weekend. The Dutch lady already took several wins this season, but none of them equals this victory. “This win is very special to me as it is my first EU title”, says Vos, who will show the white-blue jersey on Sunday in Sweden for the first time.

The track in Herning didn’t promise a lot of tension with only flat kilometers. The sprinters of the peloton were expected to fight side by side for the European champion title. Nevertheless six riders managed to escape from the pack in the final. One of those was Marianne Vos. The French and Belgian ladies missed the attack and put themselves at the head of the bunch, but it was already too late.

Katarzyna Pawłowska literally fell away yet before the finish line was in sight. This manoeuvre also forced Charlotte Becker to drop from the leading group. Zabelinskaya ultimately tried to escape a group sprint, but only Longo Borghini couldn’t follow which led to the remaining three to sprint for victory. Zabelinskaya, who lost the Olympic gold medal from Vos in London 2012, had to let go quickly. Bronzini battled with Vos until the finish line, but the Dutch leading lady managed to keep the lead and took her most beautiful victory of the season.

Marianne Vos: “The European championship was one of my goal yet at the start of the season, together with the Dutch championship and the Worlds. So I am focusing on one-day races this year. The national title literally fell away, so this championship was my first real goal. This victory means a lot to me, because it’s my first EU title. I’m still enjoying this amazing win.”
