"What a pleasure to enjoy the last 2km"

Second win for Marczyński at Vuelta
After his first victory at stage 6, Lotto Soudal rider Tomasz Marczyński offered his team a second win. He impressed his fellow attackers at stage 12 by attacking on his own with more than 20km to go. No rider saw the Polish back before the finish line. “What a pleasure to enjoy the last two kilometers, when I heared the gap was big enough”, said a delighted winner.

The riders were presented a rather short stage at the 12th racing day. The 160km long track was characterized by a flat start followed by a first and second category climb. The peloton kept the pace very tight during the first racing hour. Therefore it lasted for more than 60km for the breakaway to split from the bunch. Ultimately 14 riders were given a permit to get upfront. That group included Marczyński and Aqua Blue Sport rider Peter Koning.

At Puerto del Léon the group stayed together, but next at Puerto del Torcal Fraile, Canty and Marczyński seemed to be the best climbers. With more than 20km to go the Polish also dropped those two and went all-in on his own. On top of this climb he collected a minute bonus, which was more than enough with only a descent left. Marczyński had the time to celebrate and throwed his hands in the air at the finish line.

In the back Contador attacked on the last climb, making Froome nervous. The British twice stood still, also as a consequence of a crash. El Pistolero grabbed 22 seconds back on Nibali & co, leader Froome arrived even 20 seconds later.

Tomasz Marczyński offered another big win to his team Lotto Soudal: “It is very exciting to win today, especially because the race started close to my home. A lot of people were cheering at me, which motivated me even more this morning. I knew I had good legs and kept control over the race all day. I maintained my focus and paced myself a bit for the last climb. With only two kilometers to go I heard the gap was still 50 seconds so I could enjoy and celebrate until the finish line. Really incredible”, told an extremely satisfied winner.
