The equipment

Victor Campenaerts is going to break the World Hour Record, timed by Tissot
We covered the ‘Flying Moustache’ in detail two weeks ago. But that’s not all. Which suit is Victor Campenaerts wearing? Does he have a custom made helmet? What about his shoes, they are new, right? Discover every piece of information that will finalize our coverage of his equipment.

The HJC Adwatt helmet

Victor joined the Lotto Soudal team in 2018 and together with his initial wind tunnel tests on his bike, we immediately started to investigate the HJC helmet Victor was going to wear. These test results and a 3D scan of his head resulted in a custom made HJC Adwatt, which perfectly suits Victor’s measurements.

“For me it’s the fastest helmet I ever tested”, the European ITT champ says. Watching his previous races you notice he’s riding without a visor. That’s contradictory, isn’t it?

“It’s very specific to me. As opposed to Tiesj Benoot, who is faster with a visor, my aero performances improve without. On top of that it offers me better cooling conditions, because you loose a lot of heat through your head.”

The Vermarc suit

Apart from the design, Victor won’t use the European ITT champ print this time, there won’t be any changes to the suit he always uses. Short sleeves are without a doubt his preference.

“The aero difference with long sleeves is really limited. Again I prefer to choose for optimized cooling conditions in temperatures around 30°C. Vermarc and I have put a lot of effort in this to get the fastest suit possible”, Victor says.

The Gaerne shoes & socks

Because shoe covers are prohibited during a World Hour Record attempt Victor and Gaerne launched a new project that resulted in the biggest innovation dedicated to Victor’s Hour Record attempt.

“The standard of the shoe stayed the same, but we introduced lace fastening underneath the rubber which eliminates regular buttons to tighten the shoes around your feet. These new Gaerne shoes are faster than shoe covers, again against all odds, but also tested. They are very comfortable and I wore them during my recent Tirreno stage victory, so I will keep on using them in future road races”, he winks.

Victor will also wear Gaerne socks, which also improves aero performances.

No gloves

Victor doesn’t feel comfortable wearing gloves, so he will steer to the Hour Record bare-handed: “Aerodynamically the advantage of gloves is minimal. But it’s also a choice in favor of cooling conditions. Veins are running superficial around your wrists, so you’re able to lose heat very well there.”

A tailor-made frame and handlebar, specific gear and tubes. An optimized preparation. A custom helmet, suit and shoes. We think Victor Campenaerts is ready to break the UCI Hour Record. Go Victor!
