"I confirmed my good shape today"

Tim Wellens pursues set of wins for Lotto Soudal at GP de Wallonie
Lotto Soudal keeps on winning races. After their memorable set of wins at La Vuelta, Tim Wellens has won the GP de Wallonie. The red-white formation controlled the whole race with 4 riders finishing in the top 7. “I confirmed my good shape today”, said Wellens, who is selected for the World Championships next week.

The Belgian team went to this race with a strong formation, containing last year’s winner Tony Gallopin and other well-known riders. So the team seemed to have ambition to win this race again. The early breakaway was already caught at 52 km from the finish, so the final of the race started early. The wind played its part by cutting of a group of 22 riders with about an hour to go. On the Côte de Lustin 8 riders managed to split this group as well. Lotto Soudal was well represented with 3 riders, Benoot, Gallopin and Wellens, in the head of the race, outnumbering the others. Tim Wellens took advantage of this situation by placing an attack at 16 km from the finish line. Benoot and Gallopin dropped the speed in the chase and Wellens increased the gap. That way he arrived solo on the Citadel of Namur and the Belgian took his 4th win of the season. Gallopin sprinted to the 2nd place, Benoot finished 4th. With also Vanendert 7th and Bjorg Lambrecht (Team Belgium U23) 9th in his first pro race 5 Ridley’s ended in the top 10 of the race.

Tim Wellens was happy with this performance in preparation of the World Championships in Bergen next week. “I already felt really good in Canada and today I confirmed I’m in good shape. Benoot, Gallopin and Maes did a great job so I had the chance to enjoy the clast climb on the Citadel. We performed great today as a team”, said Wellens.
