"A power sprint suits me well"

Vos takes the win and the lead at Lotto Belgium Tour
Marianne Vos sprinted to victory in the second stage of the Lotto Belgium Tour. One day after her defeat against Jolien D’Hoore in the prologue, the Dutch female rider this time impressed the race leader at the mythical arrivée in Meerbeke. Both also switched positions in the general and sprint classification. “It was a real power sprint which suits me well”, said a delighted European Champion.

The 114 km long stage in and around Meerbeke with the finish line at the ancient arrivée of the Tour of Flanders started at high pace. The whole bunch arrived at the first of three climbs that counted for the KOM jersey. In between those climbs three riders escaped from the pack, with Trine Schmidt of Lotto Soudal Ladies being one of them. Lenny Druyts couldn’t keep up the pace upfront and was left behind. In the final eleven riders were able to join the initial breakaway group, with the top 3 of the ranking being present. Some of them attempted in vain to escape, so this group was sprinting to take the win. Marianne Vos this time impressed Jolien D’Hoore and the WM3 Pro Cycling rider throwed her wheel over the finish line first.

With this stage win she also took the leader’s jersey, as well as the lead in the sprint classification. She obviously was very happy with this result. “The decision fell at one of the most strenuous parts of the track, so the strongest riders were upfront. With Jolien D’Hoore and Coryn Rivera in the group you’re never sure of the victory, but it was a real power sprint which suits me well. I have never won the Tour of Flanders here, but now I do in the Lotto Belgium Tour. We’ll see what the coming days will bring in terms of the general classification”, said the current European Champion.
