"I told before it was my goal to win this race"

Wellens wins Queen stage at inaugural Tour of Guangxi
Tim Wellens has won the Queen stage of the Tour of Guangxi, the brand new closing event of the WorldTour. On the final climb he managed to outrun Bauke Mollema and Nicolas Roche. The Belgian did what he aimed for: “I told before it was my goal to win this race.”

The Tour of Guangxi is a brand new WorldTour race in China and promptly the closing event of the road race season. Many teams therefore sent a strong team to this area with magnificent and rather unknown scenery in WorldTour cycling (see images). In this beautiful area Tim Wellens had long been planning to perform. The young Belgian’s ambition was to win the Queen stage and later on the GC.

The favorites’ race started at the final ascent to the finish line. With only 5 kilometers to go a massive crash took place in the peloton. Tim Wellens managed to avoid the crash and he stayed in the front of the race. Nicolas Roche was the first to attempt to force the ultimate breakaway, but Wellens took his wheel together with Mollema. Wellens pulled very hard in the final meters and Mollema died in his wheel. The Belgian throwed his hands in the air and achieved one of his last goals of the season. By winning the Queen stage he also took the leader’s jersey.

No doubt he was very happy with this result. “I told before it was my goal to win this race, so I’m very happy with this performance. I thought Roche’s attack was too early, but nobody tried to follow him so I replied to his move. I knew it was an odd finish with those turns in the final and with 300 meters to go I went all-in. Tomorrow is another tough stage, but we have a very strong team so we should keep my first place”, said the victorious Belgian.
