Why the ASTR RS Is the Perfect Bike for the Traka

  • News
The Traka pushes every rider — and their gear — to the limit. That’s why top athletes like Paul Sandmann and the Ridley Racing Team are putting their trust in the ASTR RS. It’s not just our racers who rely on this new benchmark in gravel performance — several of our engineers are in Girona this weekend too, ready to take on the rugged Catalan terrain. So why is the ASTR RS such a logical choice for a race like the Traka? Here’s why.

Cyclingnews already dubbed the ASTR RS a blueprint for the gravel bike of the future. No surprise there, since gravel racing is evolving at lightning speed. Organizers are increasingly designing courses with punishing climbs, rocky sections, and dusty, stony trails. To meet these demands, our engineers developed a frame with an impressive 52 mm tire clearance. This allows for wider tires that offer optimal grip, comfort, and control — exactly what you need on a course like the Traka.

Performance Geometry

Wider tires require adjusted geometry. The ASTR RS blends speed and control through a clever combination of features from our existing models. The head angle and chainstays are reminiscent of the Kanzo Fast, delivering sharp, responsive handling. At the same time, the seat tube angle and wheelbase take cues from the Kanzo Adventure, providing added stability and confidence on long rides.

This combination makes the ASTR RS just as comfortable on steep climbs as it is on technical descents — exactly the kind of versatility that makes the difference at the Traka. Add in the low weight (just 890 grams for the frame) and aerodynamic design, and you’ve got a bike that belongs in the 'aero-to-weight' category: fast and efficient, with no compromises.

The Riders’ Choice

Paul Sandmann is competing in the Traka 360 on Friday. His bike setup shows just how much he’s taking advantage of what the ASTR RS has to offer. He’s going with Dubnital 2.2 Race-Rapid tires — a clear nod to mountain bike style — a smart choice for extra grip and comfort. His groupset? The highly precise and rugged SRAM Transmission XX1.

The Ridley Racing Team riders will also be on the starting line, taking on the Traka 200. They’re aiming for a strong performance and are putting their trust in their equipment. One thing is certain: their bikes won’t be the weak link. The Traka is unpredictable, demanding, and unforgiving — which is exactly why riders make the difference with the ASTR RS.
